The Audrie Gardham Ulmer ’37 Center for Innovation and Design at Friends’ Central School is an adaptive reuse project designed by Cicada Architecture that converted a former gymnasium into a 6,800-square-foot, two-story makerspace. Serving as the campus hub for STEAM education, the facility features specialized studios for design, prototyping, fabrication, and robotics. Envelope Matters: Passive Design Strategies That Cut Energy and Costs · November 5, 11 AM
In partnership with Livingsystems and Sanderson Design, this interdisciplinary panel will explore how much of a project budget should be allocated to the building envelope, with comparisons across single-family, multifamily, and commercial projects. Through real-world case studies, panelists will highlight how early design decisions—such as orientation, massing, façade systems, insulation, and airtightness—impact both performance and cost. The discussion will provide practical guidance for developers and designers on balancing the cost of the building envelope with HVAC systems, helping teams make informed choices that support high-performing, cost-effective buildings.
